A proposal has been submitted to merge a new design system theming into WordPress as part of the ongoing design system work supporting the admin design project. The proposal introduces a comprehensive set of design tokens, a new wp-theme stylesheet, a wp-theme JavaScript package with a React ThemeProvider, and CSS custom properties that provide a foundation for consistent, accessible, and customizable user interface components across the WordPress admin experience. The initial implementation is proposed for WordPress 7.1.
Design tokens form the foundation for a more consistent admin experience
According to Duthie, the proposed theming system replaces hard-coded styling with semantic design tokens and CSS custom properties that can be applied across WordPress admin components. The tokens define interface elements such as colors, typography, borders, and elevation, helping create a more unified design system while still allowing customization. He said using design tokens helps “ensure consistency across components, while still supporting customization like user color scheme.”
Duthie described “one particularly ambitious outcome of this project” as “a tool for generating color ramps from a pair of accent and background ‘seed’ colors.” He said the tool can produce “a color scale that’s configurable, visually harmonious, and provides accessible contrast between color values that are used together.” The proposal says this foundation would support greater interface personalization for users, give plugin developers a way to align with WordPress styling while preserving their own branding, and make it easier to introduce capabilities such as a true dark mode.
Explaining the need for the proposal, Duthie said maintaining a consistent look and feel across WordPress has required considerable effort over the years. He pointed to the visual refresh introduced in WordPress 7.0, particularly the reskin effort, adding that “a comprehensive theming system based on CSS properties should reduce this ongoing maintenance cost, in both React-based and non-React-based admin interfaces.”
Duthie also said the work reflects broader industry adoption of design tokens. He highlighted that the WordPress implementation follows the W3C Design Tokens Community Group’s Design Tokens (DTCG) specification, which published its first stable version last year. He added that tools such as Figma already support importing design tokens as variables, while “a set of documented, semantic design tokens are well-understood by AI agents,” helping developers maintain quality as AI-assisted development becomes more common.
Although the proposal introduces a new theming foundation, Duthie said users are unlikely to notice major visual changes in WordPress 7.1 because “the default theme was intentionally designed to be largely aligned with existing styles, and not radically change the appearance of existing screens.” One visible change planned for the release is the application of the selected admin color scheme to the Site Editor through the new theming implementation.
Looking ahead, Duthie said future iterations will focus on expanding design token support across more areas of the WordPress admin, increasing adoption beyond React-based screens, and introducing additional customization capabilities, including features such as dark mode.
Feedback on the merge proposal is open through the comments on the proposal. WordPress 7.1 is scheduled for August 19, 2026, coinciding with the final day of WordCamp US, while Beta 1 is slated for July 15.
