The WordPress Plugin Directory has raised the “Active Install” limit to over 10 million and plugins hosted on WordPress.org can now display active installation counts exceeding 10 million. Audrey Capital-sponsored contributor Samuel “Otto” Wood made the change on May 22, 2024.
In February 2017, the “Active Install” threshold was raised to 3 million from 1 million and again to 5 million after 6 months in August 2017.
Currently, the Repository has four plugins with 10 M+ installations: Elementor, Contact Form 7, Yoast SEO, and the Classic Editor. Elementor crossed five million active WordPress installs in 2020, while Yoast SEO crossed eleven million the same year.
What’s interesting is that Classic Editor still has 10M+ active installations after all these years leading Jason Coleman (CEO of Stranger Studios) to tweet “There’s maybe a market for making a better classic editor.”
