All New Core Program Team Launches to Streamline WordPress Contributions

  • News

Mary Hubbard announced the launch of the Core Program Team, an expansion of the approach first introduced with the Core AI Team. The new team is designed to improve coordination across Core so as to make it easier for contributors to work together, and Tammie Lister will serve as the team’s first representative.

“ The goal of this team is to strengthen coordination across Core, improve efficiency, and make contribution easier. It will focus on documenting practices, surfacing roadmaps, and supporting new teams with clear processes.”

Goals and Priorities

Mary Hubbard said the team will focus on improving coordination and making contributions smoother, stating, “ The goal of this team is to strengthen coordination across Core, improve efficiency, and make contribution easier. It will focus on documenting practices, surfacing roadmaps, and supporting new teams with clear processes.”

Mary Hubbard emphasized that the team’s role is not to direct product decisions, as highlighted, “ The Core Program Team will not set product direction. Each Core team remains autonomous. The Program Team’s role is to listen, connect, and reduce friction so contributors can collaborate more smoothly.”

Tammie Lister also provided more details about the team’s focus on supporting contributors and addressing inter-dependencies across the Core teams, as stated, “ The new Core Program Team is strategically focused on the inter-dependencies between the many sub-teams that when combined, make up the overall Core Team as it exists today. This includes (though is not limited to) efficient use of processes by contributors of all skill sets, levels, and backgrounds, lowering the barrier of entry for new contributors, and making it easier for everyone to contribute.”

Addressing Contributor Challenges

She also explained why the team is needed, highlighting the challenges caused by unclear processes and inconsistent practices, “ There’s a need for greater clarity, shared direction, and consistency across teams, as different approaches and undocumented processes can sometimes create friction or slow things down…..Focusing on documenting and refining processes, while offering a clearer view of project direction will make collaboration smoother and help both existing and new contributors feel more supported.”

What the Team Will (and Wonďż˝??t) Do

Tammie Lister also clarified what the team will and won’t do, explaining its role in improving efficiency without directing teams, “ This team will not dictate where the project is going. Instead, it will aim to help all groups involved understand how any given direction affects them, how they can support other teams, and make it known when other teams can support them….There are also a number of things this team won’t do, it won’t tell each team what to do. It will listen and work out impact before suggesting any changes. The clear goal is how to improve efficiency, make contribution easier through clarity and improve the experience for those looking to find work to engage in.”

She also outlined the next steps, emphasizing the importance of community involvement and collaboration. Interested folks can join the  #core-program channel on Slack.
