WordPress AI Team Announces First Public Release of AI Experiments Plugin

  • News

The WordPress AI team has released version 0.1.0 of its new AI Experiments plugin, marking the first public milestone for a project designed to test emerging AI-powered features before they are considered for WordPress core. The AI Experiments Plugin is part of the AI Building Blocks for WordPress initiative introduced earlier this year.

What the AI Experiments Plugin Aims to Do

Jeffrey Paul noted that the project “creates a dedicated space where experimental AI features can develop before potentially moving into core,” adding that it allows the community to try out real workflows in a “safe and optional way.”

He also highlighted that it aligns with the’ long-term goal for AI in WordPress, “This is exciting because it connects directly to the long-term goal for AI in WordPress: providing a consistent, open set of building blocks that anyone can extend.”

He also stated that testing these early features will help shape how Abilities, the WP AI Client, and the Model Context Protocol evolve to support more intelligent writing tools, improved admin workflows, enhanced media handling, and adaptive interfaces that still give users full control.

James LePage (Director of Engineering AI at Automattic) and a member of the WordPress AI team, highlighted the impact of this release, “ This is a pretty big release. It’s the first time all building blocks are used together and represents a really great reference for developers that surfaces in features that you can use right now.”

What’s Included in AI Experiments Plugin Version 0.1.0

This version introduces the foundational structure for future AI experiments and includes the first working example, which is a Title Generation feature. This feature suggests alternative post titles directly inside the block editor to improve clarity, engagement, or tone.

The release also adds an Experiments Registry and Loader System, a new system that organizes and loads different experimental features. In addition, it includes an abstract Experiment Base Class that gives all experiments the same underlying structure.

A basic settings screen is included and also introduces the first set of Abilities utilities available through the WP AI Client SDK, which allows communication with AI providers.

This release lets developers see how Abilities, MCP, and the WP AI Client SDK work together to bring AI providers into WordPress features. The team is seeking community input on the integration model, extensibility, and naming conventions.

The upcoming 0.2.0 release is planned to introduce several new AI-driven experiments, including features for Excerpt Generation, Image Generation, and Alt Text Generation. This update will also debut an Abilities Explorer, a tool that lets users see which Abilities are active on their site and interact with them. In addition, the team intends to add an AI Playground, finalizing the UX and adding more filters, hooks, and documentation for developers.
