🗣️TALK OF THE TOWN
The WordPress Core AI Team has introduced WP-Bench, the official WordPress AI benchmark, which evaluates how well language models understand WordPress development, from core APIs and coding standards to plugin architecture and security best practices.
📰 WORDPRESS & AROUND
All the updates around WordPress and its closely related technologies
The new Core Team Representatives will succeed the current reps, Francesca Marano, Jb Audras, and Benjamin Zekavica. The deadline for nominations is February 1, 2026.
- View Transitions will be a part of WP Admin from WordPress 7.0: The View Transition plugin will now be a part of the Core. For now, it will be limited to the admin area, as confirmed by Felix Arntz.
- Three new UI updates to WordPress Playground: The update includes a dedicated dashboard for managing saved playgrounds, a clear warning and one-click option to save unsaved work, and quick access links that make navigating common admin pages faster and easier. WordPress Playground has also removed support for PHP 7.2 and 7.3. The minimum PHP version is now 7.4.
- What’s new for developers? (January 2026): Key updates include a more flexible responsive Grid block, a new dedicated Font Library screen in wp-admin, expanded support for PHP-only block registration, and progress toward app-like routing in the editor.
- WooCommerce 10.5 will remove the AccessiblePrivateMethods trait completely: The AccessiblePrivateMethods trait was introduced in 7.0 and deprecated in WooCommerce 9.6. Extensions using it may break and should either include the trait themselves or stop using it. WooCommerce 10.5 will also introduce an experimental Product Object Caching feature.
- Critical privilege escalation vulnerability patched in the Modular DS plugin: The vulnerability allowed attackers to bypass authentication and gain admin access. The issue has been patched in version 2.5.2, and users are strongly advised to update immediately.
- Wordfence Intelligence Weekly WordPress Vulnerability Report (January 5, 2026 to January 11, 2026): Last week, there were 264 vulnerabilities disclosed in 214 plugins and 31 themes.
- Node.js patched async hooks stack overflow denial of service issue: A Node.js bug caused applications using async_hooks or AsyncLocalStorage to crash instead of throwing a catchable error when deep, user-controlled recursion exhausted the stack, enabling denial of service attacks. The issue has now been addressed.
- All new Cowork by Claude: Cowork lets Claude access a folder on your computer to read, edit, or create files, allowing it to complete tasks autonomously like organizing downloads, generating spreadsheets, or drafting reports.
- Infiltrating the AWS console supply chain and hijacking AWS GitHub repositories via CodeBuild: Wiz Research discovered a critical supply chain vulnerability that abused a CodeBuild misconfiguration to take over key AWS GitHub repositories – including the JavaScript SDK powering the AWS Console.
- Gemini introduces Personal Intelligence: Google has launched Personal Intelligence for Gemini (in beta in the U.S.), which lets users connect Google apps like Gmail, Photos, YouTube, and Search to create a more personalized assistant. With user permission, Gemini can reason across emails, photos, and other data to give tailored help such as recalling details from images or suggesting options based on past activities.
🔧 TIP OF THE WEEK
WP Performance Tip: Optimize Your Database Queries
Unoptimized queries can slow down your entire site. Keep things fast and efficient with these simple practices:
- Avoid running heavy or unnecessary queries across multiple templates.
Only query what you actually need. - Never run new queries inside loops.
This creates nested queries and hurts performance. - Always clean up after custom loops using
wp_reset_postdata();
This restores the global $post object and prevents unexpected behavior.
✅ Pro Tip: Combine queries when possible and use WP_Query carefully to avoid over-fetching data.
A little optimization goes a long way toward keeping your site smooth, stable, and scalable.
