Popular Shopify Developer Platform Mantle Shuts Down, Impacting Hundreds of App Businesses

  • News

Mantle, the AI-powered business layer built for Shopify app developers, has announced plans to wind down its operations, catching much of the Shopify ecosystem off guard. In a post published on June 16, 2026, the company said it had made the “difficult decision” to shut down after nearly three years in business.

“Thank you for building on Mantle. After a lot of thought, we’ve made the difficult decision to wind down Mantle over the coming months,” the company wrote. The announcement did not include a reason for the closure.

Founded in 2023 by former Shopify employees Jordan Graham (CEO), Oren Harris (Head of Operations), and Josh Gosse (Head of Product Engineering), Mantle helped developers manage billing, analytics, customer data, and operational workflows, allowing teams to focus on building products instead of maintaining infrastructure.

Over the past few years, Mantle built a strong reputation within the Shopify ecosystem. In 2024, the company acquired App Store Analytics and Shopify App Store Index (SASI), expanding its analytics offering. The company made it clear that both these too will be winding down.

Shutdown Timeline Announced

Mantle said customers should begin planning migrations immediately. The company warned that all services, including its dashboard, APIs, and MCPs, will be deprecated as part of the shutdown process.

“Whether you’re using the Mantle dashboard, APIs, MCPs, you will need to plan for their deprecation. Any critical dependencies reliant on Mantle must be migrated by the dates described below or you will face disruption,” the company said.

Most Mantle services will be discontinued within 60 days, on August 14, 2026. Customers using Mantle Billing have been given additional time and will continue to be supported until September 30, 2026. The company is advising those customers to migrate to Shopify’s App Pricing solution. Shopify App Pricing, introduced recently, allows developers to set up pricing plans directly in Shopify without relying on the Billing API.

Mantle Will Not Be Sold

Mantle also confirmed that the shutdown will be permanent and that the company is not seeking a buyer. “This wind down will be a complete shutdown of all Mantle properties and eventual destruction of data. You don’t have to worry about it switching hands,” the company stated.

The announcement has sparked discussion across the Shopify community, with some questioning why Shopify itself did not acquire the company. Others have expressed hope that parts of Mantle’s technology may eventually be open sourced, though the company has not indicated any such plans.

The closure will also affect community initiatives. Techtonic, Mantle’s developer-focused event scheduled for July 23, 2026, has been cancelled.

Community Reacts

The news prompted an outpouring of reactions from Shopify app developers and founders, many of whom credited Mantle with becoming an essential part of their businesses.

“The gap Mantle leaves is real. Shopify app devs already fight for every install and losing infra mid-scale is brutal,” said Rafal Modrzewski, founder of StoreRadar.

Katie Keith, co-founder of Barn2, said the closure would have a significant impact on app companies that rely on the platform. “Shocked to hear that Mantle is closing down, as they’re the most popular and most highly respected platform providing services for app companies. This will have a big impact on Barn2,” she wrote.

Kunal Konde of Recheck described Mantle as “the best app we’ve had for the ecosystem backed by an even best-er team.”

The announcement also sparked discussion on Reddit, where a thread titled “Shocked: Mantle is winding down” quickly drew comments from community members.

As developers begin evaluating alternatives, some companies are already moving to fill the gap left by Mantle’s departure. Affilitrak is launching “Affilitrak for Shopify Apps,”  and and ShopDev Alliance, a paid Slack community for Shopify developers, has announced Brightwork, a developer-first event set for July 23, 2026, coinciding with the date of Mantle’s cancelled Techtonic conference. Josiah Hubbard, a Shopify expert has launched an open source snippet library in Github to help Shopify Partners recreate Mantle reporting and tools.
