Call for Volunteers Opens for Upcoming WordPress Default Theme Twenty Twenty-Seven

  • News

A call for volunteers has been announced for the development of the Twenty Twenty-Seven default theme, which will be released with WordPress 7.2, set for release in December 2026. The themeโ€™s design will be led by Henrique Iamarino.

The last default theme, Twenty Twenty-Five, was released in 2024 with WordPress 6.7, and no default theme was released with WordPress 6.9 in 2025.

Focus on Early Preparation

Anne McCarthy highlighted the importance of availability for contributors within the project timeline, โ€œ For anyone volunteering to help, please keep this timeline in mind as it means being available to help during that timeframe in particular as well as in these early stages. โ€œ

McCarthy said the early call is intended to give contributors enough time to begin work, iterate, and deliver a polished outcome, โ€œ To set us all up for success, this call for volunteers is being shared on the early side so folks have plenty of time to get started, complete iterations, and land something wonderful for the broader community.โ€

Those interested in volunteering should leave a comment under the post by March 27.

Community Response

The announcement has drawn a strong response, with several community members stepping forward to contribute. The group of interested contributors includes both newcomers and those with experience working on previous default themes, such as Carolina Nymark (development lead for Twenty Twenty-One and co-lead for Twenty Twenty-Five), Troy Cahplin and Maggie Cabrera (Co-Lead for the Twenty Twenty-Four Default Theme).

Among the responses, Jessica Lyschik (Co-Lead for the Twenty Twenty-Four Default Theme) asked about the timeline for the start of development in the comments, โ€œ Is there a timeline when development will start? I remember TT4 being very stressful due to delays until actual development started.โ€

Responding to the question, McCarthy noted that no timeline has been finalized yet and that the effort aims to begin early to avoid delays, โ€œ Not yet. The entire aim is to get on this sooner rather than later though to prevent delays. The first step is the design.โ€
