To mark the 14th annual Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), Equalize Digital is bringing together the WordPress community to improve web accessibility across the platform. At the time of this writing, 33 participants have pledged a combined total of 151 hours toward making WordPress and its ecosystem more inclusive.
GAAD, a non-profit event observed globally every May, raises awareness about digital accessibility and inclusion for over one billion people worldwide living with disabilities. This year’s event emphasizes practical action, encouraging developers, designers, content creators, and site owners to make real improvements to the digital experience for all users.
How You Can Help
Participants can contribute in a variety of ways, including:
- Reporting or fixing accessibility issues in plugins, themes, or WordPress core.
- Submitting or testing patches for open accessibility tickets.
- Contributing feedback or pull requests (PRs) on Gutenberg accessibility issues.
- Enhancing accessibility on personal websites and in your products.
- Running webinars or internal training sessions on accessibility.
- Captioning accessibility-focused videos on WordPress.tv.
Get Involved
To participate, individuals can submit a pledge form detailing how many hours they’re committing (up to 24), the areas they’ll be working on, and a short summary of their contribution. Participants must consent to having their names and pledges published publicly.
GAAD is a nonprofit event, and all contributions are voluntary.
