Mary Hubbard outlined the goals for 2026, and key priorities include WordPress 7.0 with real-time co-editing, improved media and design tools, AI integration with clear guidelines, revamping meetups, and focusing on education programs.

- WordPress 6.9.1 set for February release with bug fixes only: The release follows several issues reported after WordPress 6.9 was shipped in April 2025. Users flagged several stability and compatibility problems. These included emails failing to send, plugin conflicts, and Adjacent Post Navigation triggering infinite loops.
- WordPress #Content-Creators Slack Channel closed after four months: The Slack channel, started by Anne McCarthy in September 2025 to support and connect content creators across the WordPress ecosystem, has officially been closed after four months. The channel was closed due to low engagement and difficulty maintaining momentum.

- WordPress Education Programs now has a dedicated space on WordPress.org: This new hub brings together initiatives like Campus Connect, Credits, and Student Clubs that help students learn, build, and contribute to the WordPress ecosystem.

- WordPress.com now supports OAuth 2.1 for MCP: This makes it easier for AI agents like ChatGPT or Claude Desktop to interact with your site. With OAuth 2.1, AI tools can securely access your WordPress.com content such as posts, site info, and comments without sharing passwords.
- Critical arbitrary file upload vulnerability patched in RealHomes CRM plugin: In versions 1.0.0 and below, any logged-in user (Subscriber or higher) could upload malicious files via the CSV upload feature, potentially leading to full site takeover. It was patched in version 1.0.1, and users are advised to update immediately.
- Backdoor vulnerability patched in LA-Studio Element Kit for Elementor WordPress plugin: In versions 1.5.6.3 and below, an unauthenticated attacker could create administrator accounts by exploiting a hidden parameter during user registration, leading to full site compromise. The issue was patched in version 1.6.0.
🔧 TIP OF THE WEEK
WP Theming Tip: Make Your Themes Faster 🚀
A fast theme isn’t just good design—it’s good UX. Improve speed and performance with these simple optimizations:
- Use minified CSS & JS
Minifying removes unnecessary characters, reducing file size and speeding up load times. - Enable lazy loading for images
Only load images when they enter the viewport. This drastically improves initial page speed. - Limit external scripts (fonts, icons, libraries)
Each external call adds latency. Use only what’s essential—or self‑host when possible. - Preload important assets
Fonts, hero images, and critical CSS should be preloaded to improve perceived performance and avoid layout shifts.
