A new WordPress Showcase

WordPress.org has launched the redesign of the Showcase, with new block-based components, through a collaboration between the Design, Marketing, and Meta teams that began last year. 

• State of the Word 2023 will broadcast live from Madrid on December 11: It will mark the first year the SOTW will take place from a city outside North America. This change may be a deliberate recognition of the majority (51.4%) of WordPress users who run the software in a non-English language. 
• WordPress 6.4 Release Candidate 1: The RC1 is now available for download and testing.
• WordPress 6.4 ready to be translated: WordPress 6.4, scheduled for November 7, 2023, is now ready to be translated on translate.wordpress.org.
• WordPress 6.4 Release Candidate Phase: The post covers all the policies in place now that WordPress 6.4 has entered the RC phase.
• WordPress 6.4 Field Guide: This guide shares more in-depth changes that you will find in 6.4 and is published in the Release Candidate cycle to help inform WordPress developers, extenders, and others.

New features in WP 6.4

• New option functions in 6.4: To help plugin developers improve managing their plugins’ options two sets of functions are being introduced – prime_options() and wp_set_option_autoload_values().
• HTML markup improvements to the Login and Registration page: This includes additional specific class names and better encapsulates the error and notice messages on the Login and Registration page.
• Replacing hard-coded style tags with wp_add_inline_style(): This change was implemented to address issues related to redundant code and bypassing the core’s style enqueuing system, which made it challenging for third-party developers to manage and control the output of style tags.
• Improvements to Object Caching: The Performance team has introduced several enhancements centered around object caching, leading to better handling of filters, reduced database queries, and improved overall system efficiency. 
• Improvements to Template Loading: It includes improving the performance of _register_theme_block_patterns() function and get_block_theme_folders() function 
• Image loading optimization enhancements: WordPress 6.4 comes with several enhancements to the wp_get_loading_optimization_attributes() function which was introduced in 6.3 as a central place to manage loading optimization attributes
• Miscellaneous Editor changes: In this dev note, you will find a collection of smaller changes to existing features and API updates.

Google sees spike in failed hostload exceeded error in Search Console

 This error is being caused by abuse by spammers that are overloading the request indexing feature within Google Search Console. 

• Google completes rollout of October 2023 Spam Update: The update targets thin, copied, misleading, and overly promotional content.
• Stored Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability in LightSpeed Cache plugin: The vulnerability enables threat actors with contributor-level permissions or higher to inject malicious web scripts into pages using the plugin’s shortcode. Please update to thelatest patched version of LiteSpeed Cache.
