Automattic Launches $30K Open Horizons Scholarship to Empower Diverse WordPress Contributors

  • News

In a move to expand representation in the WordPress ecosystem, Automattic has launched the Open Horizons Scholarship, a $30,000 initiative to support active WordPress contributors from underrepresented, underserved, and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The program is designed to fund travel and participation at flagship WordPress events.

The Goal: Making WordCamps More Accessible for Everyone

A portion of the funding comes from Automattic’s employee-led groups Queeromattic and its Physically Disabled resource group, contributing $6,000 to the initiative. The scholarship aims to help contributors overcome financial barriers that might otherwise limit their participation in the global WordPress community.

The scholarship will be available starting with WordCamp US 2025 and joins other established support programs like the Kim Parsell Memorial Scholarship and the Diversity Scholarship, backed by WordPress Community Support.

Automattic has stated that this scholarship is more than just a travel fund,“ More than just a travel fund, the Open Horizons Scholarship is a step toward a more inclusive and sustainable WordPress ecosystem. It’s an invitation for new voices to shape the future of the project, and a reflection of Automattic’s commitment to championing diverse, independent leadership beyond our own teams.”

Applications are now open, and eligible contributors are encouraged to apply.
