WordPress Accessibility Day is a free, 24-hour, non-profit global event dedicated to raising awareness and sharing best practices for building accessible websites using WordPress. First launched in 2020 by the WordPress core Accessibility Team, the event has since grown into an independent, community-led initiative.
The team is now seeking individuals fluent in English and other languages to help translate presentation videos. Both paid and volunteer roles are available. While the current focus is on French (European) and Spanish, speakers of other languages are also encouraged to reach out. The goal is to broaden access to accessibility knowledge by making content available in multiple languages.
The Translation Process and Opportunities
Each video that needs to be translated is around 50 minutes long. After joining the team, translators are assigned a specific video by the translation coordinator and will be provided with the original English transcript and a preliminary AI-generated version in the target language.
Translators are expected to carefully review and refine the AI translation, ensuring it accurately reflects the original content. The original video will also be available for context and reference.
The team was able to raise funds and is now able to offer paid translation opportunities for recorded sessions from the 2023 and 2024 conferences. Translators working in Spanish and French (European) are currently eligible for compensation. Each completed translation earns $80, with payments processed through PayPal, Zelle, or Wise.
Although funding currently covers only Spanish and French translations, WP Accessibility Day is also seeking volunteers to help translate sessions into other languages. So far, volunteers have contributed translations in languages such as Bulgarian, Dutch, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Korean, and Malay.
In the future, the team expects to offer paid translation opportunities for more languages. Interested folks can apply and join the team now and help with their efforts. The WP Accessibility Day nonprofit was founded in 2023 by Amber Hinds, Joe Dolson, and Bet Hannon, and this year’s WordPress Accessibility Day is scheduled for October 15th-16th.
