Michelle Frechette has introduced a new initiative called WP Trail Buddies, aimed at making flagship WordCamp events more welcoming and less intimidating, especially for first-time attendees. The initiative will pair WordCamp veterans with newcomers, ensuring that first-time attendees at flagship events like WordCamp US, WordCamp Europe, and WordCamp Asia have a knowledgeable mentor to help them navigate and make the most of the event.
The Process
Participants in the WP Trail Buddies program are matched approximately a week before a flagship WordCamp event, with an introduction sent via email. Organizers aim to pair attendees based on shared interests to encourage meaningful connections.
New attendees are encouraged to register for WordCamps as usual and sign up at WP Trail Buddies, as a newcomer or veteran. Once paired, the members are expected to connect ahead of time, plan to meet at registration, and check in with each other throughout the day. Optional activities include attending sessions together, exploring the sponsor hall, and making introductions within the community.
