WP Accessibility Day 2026 took place on October 7 and 8 as a 24-hour virtual conference dedicated to website accessibility best practices for WordPress websites. The program included sessions on artificial intelligence, accessible design, testing, and development practices.

The event marked its sixth edition and its second year using pre-recorded presentations in Zoom Events.

Keynote delivered by Ed Summers

Ed Summers, a blind software developer and Head of Accessibility at GitHub, opened the conference with a keynote titled “The Renaissance of Achievement for People with Disabilities“. He discussed the potential of generative AI to support people with disabilities and the positive impacts of the technology emerging within the disability community.

In addition to his role at GitHub, he serves on disability-related government and nonprofit boards.

Sessions address AI, inclusive design, and web accessibility

The conference featured 24 sessions covering accessibility testing, inclusive design, artificial intelligence (AI), WordPress development, and the challenges of maintaining accessible websites. Presentations addressed both practical approaches to accessibility and broader questions about how teams build, test, and maintain accessible digital experiences.

AI and accessibility were recurring topics. Kevin Andrews (Web Accessibility Specialist) presented You Didn’t Fix Accessibility. You Automated the Problem: AI in the WordPress Ecosystem, while Simon Miner (Founder & CEO, Pedal Point Solutions) explored AI, Accessibility, and WordPress: Deciding What to Trust, Test, and Do Yourself. Other sessions examined accessibility testing in development workflows, including William Patton’s (Software Engineer, Equalize Digital) WCAG in CI/CD: Catch Accessibility Bugs Like Any Other Bug.

The event also covered accessible design and development practices. Julia Undeutsch (Accessibility Specialist, Atos Technologies Austria GmbH) presented Band-Aids on Broken Code: Why Accessibility Plugins Can’t Replace Human Skill, and Caroline Desrosiers (Founder & CEO, Scribely) discussed image workflows in Embedded Alt Text: Smarter Image Workflows in WordPress 7.0. Other sessions addressed accessible PDFs, keyboard focus, page zoom, neurodivergence, and accessibility personas.

The program also included sessions on accessibility policies, acceptance criteria, content experiences, and the business impact of digital accessibility. Together, the 24 sessions covered a range of technical, design, organizational, and user-experience considerations related to digital accessibility.

The team behind WP Accessibility Day 2026

The event was supported by 28 organizers and 37 volunteers who helped deliver the 24-hour conference. Their work included coordinating technical logistics, supporting captioners and interpreters, moderating sessions, and helping keep the event running.

Sponsorship was a challenge for this year’s event. In an earlier post on X, Amber Hinds acknowledged the financial difficulties, writing, “we’re currently running the conference at a loss.” She also noted that the previous year’s event had attracted 2,297 attendees from 64 countries and encouraged organizations to sponsor the conference, highlighting its reach and the benefits available to sponsors.

Sponsors helped fund the event’s accessibility services and technical infrastructure. Equalize Digital and Gravity Forms were the Platinum Sponsors, while Insi, Kinsta, and WP Engine were the Gold Sponsors.

The sponsor list also included Second Melody, Tenrec, Inc., AAArdvark, AccessMate, CodeGeek, Flying Orange, Jeffrey Paul, NerdPress, Online Lunch and Learn, Pressbooks, Termageddon, The WP Open Community Collective, and Tiny Plugin Labs.

The event also acknowledged 22 Micro Sponsors.

The organizers thanked the professional captioners and sign language interpreters who helped make the conference accessible. Sponsor contributions supported professional live captioning, American Sign Language interpretation, speaker honorariums, and the technical infrastructure needed to deliver the virtual event. Individual donations made during registration also provided additional support.

WP Accessibility Day Invites Volunteers for 2027

Volunteer opportunities for the 2027 conference include speaker coordination, marketing, sponsorships, and event logistics.

Attendees can share feedback on the conference, individual sessions, event communications, Zoom Events, and accessibility through October 14, 2026. Feedback can be submitted anonymously, with the option to enter a drawing to win a WordPress Accessibility Day T-shirt.

Recordings of all sessions are available in Zoom Events through October 31, 2026, with captions and transcripts but no ASL interpretation. The organizers plan to publish updated versions with captions, transcripts, and ASL interpretation on the website.
