Envato Ends Exclusive Author Model, ThemeForest and CodeCanyon Authors Face Flat 50% Commission

  • News

Envato, a creative marketplace acquired by Shutterstock in 2024, has announced one of the biggest structural changes in the history of its marketplace ecosystem, ending its long-standing exclusive author model and moving all marketplace authors to a flat 50% revenue share starting July 1, 2026.

The decision impacts sellers across the entire Envato Marketplace network, including ThemeForest, CodeCanyon, AudioJungle, VideoHive, GraphicRiver, PhotoDune, and 3DOcean.

For WordPress businesses, the change is particularly significant for plugin and theme authors selling through CodeCanyon and ThemeForest, many of whom built businesses around Envato’s exclusive author system over the last decade.

Exclusive Author Model Comes to an End

Under the current structure, Envato authors who chose exclusivity received significantly better commission rates compared to non-exclusive sellers.

Depending on lifetime sales volume, exclusive author fees could start from as low as 12.5%, allowing creators to retain the majority of their sales revenue.

That model is now ending.

Beginning July 1, 2026, all authors will move to a single non-exclusive structure with a flat 50% revenue share regardless of category, sales history, or exclusivity status.

The change effectively removes one of the primary incentives that kept many creators selling exclusively through Envato Market.

A Major Shift in Envato’s Marketplace Strategy

The move is being interpreted by many authors as a broader strategic shift away from Envato Market itself and toward Envato Elements, the company’s subscription-focused platform.

Over the years, Envato Elements has increasingly become the centerpiece of Envato’s business strategy, offering unlimited downloads through a recurring subscription model rather than individual marketplace purchases.

Many authors now see the latest announcement as Envato signaling that creators who rely on one-time marketplace sales are no longer the company’s primary focus.

Within author communities, some creators interpreted the announcement as effectively saying:

“If you want to move your products elsewhere, you’re welcome to do that.”

WordPress Authors Among the Most Affected

While the changes impact the entire Envato ecosystem, WordPress theme and plugin developers are expected to be among the most heavily affected groups.

ThemeForest and CodeCanyon helped shape the commercial WordPress ecosystem during the 2010s, becoming major distribution channels for premium themes, plugins, PHP scripts, SaaS starter kits, WooCommerce extensions, and mobile app templates.

Many successful WordPress businesses were built entirely around Envato’s exclusive author structure and commission incentives.

For long-time exclusive authors who previously operated with commission rates near 12.5%, the shift to a flat 50% share represents a dramatic reduction in earnings.

The change also arrives at a time when many independent WordPress product companies are already navigating rising support costs, increased competition, AI-driven disruption, and changing customer purchasing behavior.

The Impact Extends Far Beyond WordPress

The changes are not limited to WordPress creators.

Authors across multiple categories are affected, including sellers of:

  • Website templates
  • Shopify themes
  • PHP scripts and custom code
  • Mobile app templates
  • Video assets
  • Audio tracks and sound effects
  • Graphics and design assets
  • Stock photography
  • 3D assets

This makes the announcement one of the largest creator-economy shifts in Envato’s history.

Envato Earlier Paused New Author Applications

The announcement follows earlier changes by Envato, including temporarily pausing new author applications until mid-April 2026.

At the time, the move raised questions within the creator community about broader marketplace restructuring efforts already underway behind the scenes.

The latest announcement now provides clearer direction on where Envato appears to be heading.

Community Reaction Begins to Build

Reaction from authors has already started building across social platforms, forums, and private creator communities.

Many long-time sellers have expressed concern over the sustainability of continuing under the new structure, particularly businesses that relied heavily on exclusive commissions and marketplace discoverability.

Others believe the changes may accelerate migration toward self-hosted sales platforms, direct licensing models, and alternative marketplaces.

For WordPress plugin and theme developers especially, the announcement could mark the beginning of a broader shift away from heavy dependence on centralized marketplaces like ThemeForest and CodeCanyon.

What Happens Next

The new revenue structure is scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2026.

Until then, marketplace authors across Envato’s ecosystem are evaluating the long-term impact the changes could have on their businesses, pricing strategies, and platform dependence.

For many creators, particularly long-time exclusive authors, the announcement marks the end of an era that helped define the commercial digital product ecosystem for more than a decade.
