WP Feature Notifications: 2023 Status Update

Formerly known as the WP Notify project proposed in 2019, the project has had several developments over the last few years. The goal is to revamp how WordPress handles user notifications. Interested users can test out the new changes by downloading the latest 0.2.0 release.

• The benefits of prioritizing and measuring performance in WordPress 6.2: Felix Arntz, a WordPress core committer has published a detailed report on the performance gains achieved with WordPress 6.2. The current version loads 14-18% faster overall for block themes and 2-5% faster overall for classic themes.
• We need to improve block support for classic themes: WordPress core team member Carolina Nymark advocates improving the user experience while using block features with a classic theme.
• Google Ads is testing a gold verification badge: Google seems to be following the path of Twitter when it comes to badges. Few users have reportedly seen new badges next to ads.
• Google Ads API has undergone a few changes: The v13_1 release of the Google Ads API has introduced five new changes which will result in the users needing to update the client libraries and the client code.
• Google to allow exporting data from Universal Analytics till July 1, 2024: Google has published the various methods for exporting historical data and also made it clear that the data collection will end on July 1, 2023.
• New ways to manage your data in ChatGPT: Users can now disable chat history and also export the data. They are also working on a new ChatGPT Business subscription for professionals.
• Italy lifts ban on ChatGPT: OpenAI has addressed the privacy concerns and is now fully compliant with privacy rules which resulted in lifting the ban imposed on ChatGpt a month ago.
• Twitter to allow media publishers to charge per article: The next update that will be seen on Twitter will hopefully improve the revenue generation for media publishing houses. Instead of opting for a monthly subscription users can now pay for the articles they are interested in at a higher rate.

Multiple vulnerabilities patched in Shield Security

Two critical vulnerabilities were recently patched in Shield Security. One of the vulnerabilities allowed unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious JavaScript into an administrator dashboard in some configurations, while another allowed authenticated attackers to spoof log entries into the same dashboard

The first block theme from Mike McAlister is here and its beta version is up for testing. Some features include 50-plus block patterns, 6 full-page designs, responsive out to the box, and many more.

• Udemy to pay $4,000,000 to settle a case alleging it advertised fake discounts for its courses:  using fake reference prices to run sales is illegal under the FTC Act and California’s laws. Joost de Valk thinks it’s time for some people in the WordPress plugin ecosystem to take note.
• Kirki plugin is now up for sale: The development of Kirki plugin has been paused and the plugin is now up for grabs for a price of $30,000 but is negotiable.
• WP Speakers: This is a project started by Michelle Frechette which aims to ease the task of finding speakers for WordPress events.
• WPBlockTips: A community-driven platform to share tips about the WordPress block editor. This is an initiative started by the founder of Stackable, Benjamin Intal.
• Yoast SEO 20.6 is here: The new release introduces a readability assessment feature, and the Zapier integration will be soft-deprecated.
• WooCommerce Blocks 10.1.0 released: The new version includes theme-level Global styles for cart and checkout blocks, filter by attribute product counter revamped, new patterns, Global Styles support for product stock indicator, and more.
• Patchsatck launches free security program for WordPress plugins: The managed Vulnerability Disclosure Program (mVDP) is aimed at making sure the plugins are free of any kinds of vulnerabilities and is a completely free service.
• State of enterprise WordPress survey: Big Bite has launched a survey to understand how the platform best serves large-scale brands. The areas covered in the survey include budgets, publishing processes, platform strengths, user frustrations, custom functionality, infrastructure, architecture, and ongoing maintenance.
• First AI for WordPress event to be hosted by Human Made: This is an online event and will take place on May 25, 2023. The registrations are now open and the rest of the details will be made public soon. The event will showcase the AI projects that are in Human Made’s pipeline, highlight what others are doing with AI and also discuss the impact artificial intelligence will have on the WordPress industry.
• ‘Godfather of AI’ Geoffrey Hinton quits Google, warns about layoffs, other dangers: Geoffrey Hinton and other critics are coming together to warn of the potential dangers of AI.
• The end of Twitter auto-sharing: Jetpack Social will no longer support Twitter auto-sharing. This is the result of the pricing changes made by Twitter to its API access.
• HuggingChat, the open-source version of ChatGPT: Hugging Face has released HuggingChat an open-source alternative to ChatGPT, and is currently based on the OpenAssistant/oasst-sft-6-llama-30b model.
• ChartGPT: An AI tool that converts text into charts.
• The Periodic Table of WordPress Plugins: In order to celebrate the 20th anniversary of WordPress, core committer Pascal Birchler is showcasing the most popular WordPress plugin in a unique way, in the form of a periodic table.
• WordPress Management and Design Credential certification: This is the first credentialing exam from CertifyWP and includes 3 levels of exam questions. Users who successfully complete this course are certified to have mastered WordPress front-end development.
