WordCamp Asia 2027 Heads to Malaysia

  • News

The WordPress community will be heading to Southeast Asia once again, as WordCamp Asia 2027 is set to take place in Penang, Malaysia. The announcement was made at the recently concluded WordCamp Asia 2026 in Mumbai.

Scheduled for April 9–11, 2027, the event will be hosted at the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre (PWCC), aligning with the same dates as this year’s edition.

A Milestone Fifth Edition

The 2027 gathering marks the fifth edition of WordCamp Asia, continuing its steady rotation across the region. The flagship event debuted in Bangkok in 2023, followed by Taipei (2024), Manila (2025), and Mumbai (2026).

With Penang as its next stop, the event continues to expand its footprint while staying rooted in Asia’s diverse and growing WordPress communities.

Theme and Organizing Team

The 2027 edition will carry the theme â€śModern Heritage Aesthetic,” reflecting Penang’s blend of cultural legacy and contemporary development.

Leading the organizing efforts are:

Meanwhile, the call for organizers is now open, inviting contributors from across the region to participate in shaping the event.

A Bid Years in the Making

Applications for hosting WordCamp Asia 2027 were first opened in September 2025, setting the stage for Malaysia’s selection.

The announcement also reflects a long-standing ambition within the local community. Back in 2025, Julian Song had tweeted“With this incredible track record of success and growth, let’s hope we can bring WordCamp Asia (WCA) to Malaysia in the coming year!”—a goal that has now come to fruition.

About the upcoming WordCamp Julian said, “We like to invite you to enjoy the WordCamp and experience the city.”

Malaysia’s Growing Global Appeal

Malaysia has increasingly become a sought-after destination on the global stage. In 2026 alone, it featured in several prominent travel lists, including:

  • CNN Travel’s “20 Best Places to Visit”
  • TIME Magazine’s “World’s Greatest Places”
  • The New York Times’ “52 Places to Go”

Another notable advantage for international attendees is Malaysia’s relatively accessible visa policy. The country offers eVisa access to 31 countries, while 163 nationalities can enter visa-free for up to 90 days. This comes as welcome news, especially after visa challenges faced by some attendees during the 2026 event in India.

Its mix of culture, cuisine, and connectivity makes it a compelling host for a global WordPress gathering.

A Community on the Rise

Beyond its appeal as a destination, Malaysia’s WordPress community has been steadily gaining momentum.

On January 3, 2026, the country hosted its first-ever WordPress Campus Connect event at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Johor Bahru. The city also hosted its first WordCamp last year—marking the first time the globally recognized series reached the southern region of the country.
