Hands-On with 20i Managed WordPress Hosting: Autoscaling, Security and Key Insights

  • Hosting

Ask around, and you’ll hear plenty of opinions on which hosting for WordPress to choose. But the right choice isn’t what worked for someone else; it’s what fits your site’s needs, especially when it comes to handling traffic.

But the problem is that the traffic flow can change over time. Planned peaks can exceed expectations, and sudden surges can appear without warning. Choosing a host without keeping this in mind can easily lead to downtime when your site needs to perform when such a situation arrives.

This is exactly the scenario that 20i Managed WordPress Hosting advocates it solves. A hosting that automatically adapts to traffic spikes to ensure maximum uptime. We spent time exploring the platform, its ease of use and the features it has to offer.

The Taking Point: Autoscaling and The Problem It Solves

When choosing a hosting, there are multiple scenarios that one goes through, with a few major ones being:

  • How much traffic will there be on a regular basis?
  • How much traffic can be expected during peak moments, like campaigns or flash sales?
  • What additional features or offerings are available when comparing different providers?

These cover many of the challenges you can anticipate at present and in the near future. But no matter how much planning goes into it, there will always be traffic surges. More than what we planned for.

This is where 20i’s hosting for WordPress with the autoscaling approach is beneficial. The platform is designed to adjust dynamically as demand changes, consider it being proactive. This means there’s no need to manually upgrade or prepare in advance for spikes, as memory, bandwidth, and other required resources will be adjusted automatically as per the traffic.

Beyond Autoscaling: Performance and Reliability in Practice

Beyond autoscaling, the platform includes a range of built-in features that support performance. These include server-level caching through StackCache, an unlimited CDN with global pre-caching, a Website Acceleration Suite, high-frequency CPUs, no inode limits, and more ensure performance remains stable.

Coupled with automatic failover systems, load balancing, and real-time data replication, these measures help ensure consistent uptime and safeguard your data.

20i recently scored 98% for reliability in PC Pro Awards and was also voted the ‘Best Web Host’ for the 3rd year in a row.

Exploring the Dashboard: Simple, Yet Practical

The first point of interaction was the clearly laid out dashboard.

It provided us with access to the main tools like Hosting Management and the Migration Centre. Widgets could be moved around or reset, and there was an option to switch between light and dark modes.

Going Live With Minimal Steps

Adding a website followed a clear, step-by-step process. Using the Hosting Management widget, we selected “Add Package” in the Manage Hosting section and then “Add your first Website” on the next screen.

Here, we could choose to connect an existing domain or set up a new one.

For migrating an existing site, the Migration Center simplified the necessary steps. Another thing we appreciated was how the migration homepage gives a quick overview of the steps involved.

The process covers the transfer of files, databases, and email.

Managing a Live Site: A Host of Controls Well Laid Out

So far, the experience has been straightforward, and new WordPress users should be able to get their site live without trouble.

The real test of the hosting experience begins once a website is live. We wanted to see how easy it was to manage different aspects of the site and how the various tools were organized.

Most management tasks are handled through the WordPress Manager, which serves as a central hub for all sites. For this review, we only had one website set up, but the layout makes it easy to navigate multiple websites.

A dropdown menu provides access to several controls without needing to open the full control panel.

For more detailed settings, we could access the main control panel by clicking “Options” and selecting “Manage.” Overall, the system felt organized and made it relatively straightforward to locate and use the tools we needed.

When we first opened the control panel, it was clear there was a lot to explore.

We started by checking the WordPress Tools section, which allowed us to manage themes, plugins, and updates without logging into the site backend. The Search & Replace feature caught our attention, especially the dry run option, which made testing changes feel safer.

The CDN settings can also be configured for pre-caching, blocking visitors by country and IP address, and security headers.

Web optimization ended up being where we spent the most time. Adjusting HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and images manually gave us more control than relying on automatic one-click optimizations. This felt useful when trying different plugin and theme setups to see how the site responded.

We also navigated the file manager, email settings, phpMyAdmin, and MySQL databases. While there’s a lot to explore, having all these tools in one panel made it easier to manage multiple aspects of the site without constantly switching between different interfaces.

Besides these several developer-focused options are also there. Tools like WP-CLI, SSH access, SFTP/FTP, Git deployment, were all accessible from the dashboard.

Backups Are Automatic With One Detail to Keep in Mind

We explored how backups are handled, since keeping site data safe is always a key concern. On our plan, the Timeline Backup system automatically creates website and database snapshots, which are stored for seven days.

Email snapshots and full email account backups weren’t included on this plan, so that’s something users would need to consider depending on their needs.

There’s a Timeline Backups Pro Plan priced at £4.99, which comes with website snapshots for 30 days, database snapshots for 60 days, and email snapshots for 30 days. It also includes email account backups and snapshots.

Security Backed With SHA Trust Seal

The sense of security that 20i offers is solid, and the fact that it’s a founding member of the Secure Hosting Alliance reflects its broader focus on security and industry standards.

From the dashboard, we could access and configure essential controls such as SSH access, SSL management, daily malware scanning, and options like hotlink and password protection.

20i security features

Beyond the controls we used, the platform also includes automated protections such as DDoS and WAF, malware scanning, and login security. These features run without extra configuration, and PHP mail and cron jobs are disabled automatically if malware is detected.

Pricing Plans

20i offers a range of WordPress hosting plans, all starting at £1 for the first month. Pricing then begins at £10/month for the Startup plan, which supports a single website, and scales up through £20, £40, £80, £150, and £300/month plans, with increasing resources and the ability to manage up to 50 websites on the highest tier.

While the core features remain consistent across all plans, the main differences come down to storage, bandwidth, database capacity, the number of websites, and even the number of mailboxes, making it easy to choose a plan based on your needs.

Documentation

The 20i platform’s documentation is comprehensive. From API questions to CDN, common error codes, to web hosting, is covered with step-by-step instructions, screenshots, and videos where needed. On top of that, they’re updated regularly, which is always a plus when it comes to documentation standards.

Support

We explored the support options to see how responsive and helpful they were. Support is available 24/7 through both tickets and live chat, all accessible directly from the dashboard. There’s also a built-in personal assistant called Twentie.

During our testing, we asked Twentie several configuration-related questions and found that most queries could be answered directly, without needing to search through documentation.

20i Twentie response

To see how it handled less common requests, we also asked for suggestions for domain names for a donut business, and it provided useful ideas.

For someone new to hosting or managing websites, having an assistant like this could help reduce the time spent troubleshooting or searching for information.

20i’s Green Hosting Approach

20i powers all its hosting on 100% renewable energy, ensuring that websites on the platform are environmentally responsible without compromising performance. Their data centers are highly efficient, with a PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) of 1.2, meaning energy is used effectively to support site operations.

Sustainability extends beyond the servers. 20i’s headquarters run on solar power, while offices follow green practices such as paperless workflows, LED lighting, and encouraging eco-friendly commuting.

Final Verdict

Not every website will need autoscaling, but having it in place adds an extra layer of reliability when traffic spikes unexpectedly. The fact that you don’t need to pay extra to handle those spikes makes it even better.

The backup is where some users might give it a thought, as for email backups, users have to opt for the Timeline Backups Pro plan.

The additional Secure Hosting Alliance Trust Seal, proven reliability, all make 20i a good pickup.
