Call for Host Cities Now Open: WordCamp India Set to Join Flagship Lineup

  • News

The WordPress Community team has officially opened the call for host cities for WordCamp India, which will debut as the fourth flagship WordCamp event. Applications are now being accepted, with a deadline at the end of June 2026. The chosen host city will be announced in August 2026, and the inaugural WordCamp India is targeted for October–December 2027.

A New Flagship for WordPress

WordCamp India was declared as the newest flagship event during WordCamp Asia in Mumbai earlier this year. It joins WordCamp Europe, WordCamp US, and WordCamp Asia as one of the premier global gatherings for the WordPress community. Beyond the announcement, no further details were shared at the time, except that the event would be added to calendars starting next year.

Automattician Karen Alma explained that leaving out specifics was intentional:

“There are no pre-selected host cities, no appointed leads, and no locked-in dates. The where, who, and when are all open — and we want the community to shape those decisions together.”

Host City Application Guidelines

Cities interested in hosting WordCamp India are encouraged to submit applications that address key requirements. Venues must have the capacity to host more than 2,000 attendees across multiple tracks. Event infrastructure should include sponsor and exhibition halls, networking areas, and space for Contributor Day. Connectivity and accessibility are important factors. Applicants are advised to consider venues connected to hotels where possible.

Support for Organizers

The newly established WordPress Central Events team will support local organizers by handling complex aspects such as logistics, audio/visual, and operations. This ensures events remain community-driven while benefiting from professional execution.

Timeline

Applications are open now and will remain so until the end of June 2026. The Community team managers will review submissions in mid-July, and the announcement of the host city is expected at the beginning of August 2026.

Once the host city is announced, the call for organizers will open, and leads will be selected in partnership with the host community.

India and WordPress

Karen Alma emphasized the importance of India’s inclusion:

“India has one of the largest and fastest-growing WordPress communities in the world, and a dedicated flagship event reflects that reality. A flagship in India will support the continued growth of the WordPress community in India, improve accessibility and participation for people who may not be able to attend other flagship events, and broaden ecosystem impact.”

This sentiment echoes Hubbard’s keynote at the last WordCamp Asia, where she highlighted India’s long-standing role in the WordPress ecosystem, noting that “India’s role in WordPress is not recent.” She pointed to contributions from companies like rtCamp and the sustained efforts of local communities organizing WordCamps and meetups across the country. The keynote also turned attention to Education and CampusConnect, described as a “homegrown” Indian initiative that has since grown into a global movement.

Upcoming WordCamps

The next flagship events on the calendar are WordCamp Europe (June 4–6, 2026) and WordCamp US (August 16–19, 2026). Next year’s WordCamp Asia will take place on April 9–11, 2027 in Penang, Malaysia.
